Re: Of course we support you

Don, I am really sorry your family is having "issues". Please remember that these are just that, THEIR issues. you know why you are doing this, and you deserve a healthier, happier life.

I am possibly going to an info night on banding tomorrow with a friend who called today, it will be interesting to learn more. And my other friend who had it done (she is from QLd) just flew for the first time without needing a seat belt extender. She was SO happy!

    on the scales

The optifast regime I am on allows 2 cups of non starchy vegies per day (no potatoes or beans) as well as the 3 serves of optifast.

This week weighed tis morning 1.1Kg down I probably lost more but it was cold and I had clothes on.

Now weigh 122.7 Kg and I am 178 cm tall for those who are into statistics.

The weekend was a challenge AGM at the petanque club and that was a free food and drinks effort so I left after the official meeting.

Didn’t go swimming I was working Saturday and Sunday was cool with gale force winds.

I must admit my back seemed noticeably better this morning perhaps even loosing a modest amount is worthwhile.

    Hi Don

Make sure you drink at least 2 litres of water while on Optifast.  The more you drink the better.

I found that one of the hardest things, making sure to get that water in.

How are you finding the Optifast?  Are you just doing shakes? or trying the bars and dessert aswell.  I've tried the Berry Crunch Bar, and find I can't eat it all in one sitting, very sickly.

The wind on Sunday was awful, it drove me nuts by the end of the day....LOL

    Re: on the scales

I have not tried the bars others have said the berry one is very sweet.

They seem more expensive (perhaps I am just tight).

I didn’t like the vanilla shakes.

I have added some coffee and NutraSweet to the chocolate shake it seems to make it more to my taste.

I have some water with my pills in the morning and a few drinks though the day 2l seems easy to me but I am a bigger person.

    Re: on the scales

Sending you positive vibes Don, sometimes people dont like change and it scares them, but you have to do what sits right with you and I think only you know that. Maybe the wife isnt ready to change her old ways, today is the first day ive been to shop in ages and not bought any lollies, I know they dont serve me well and my kids dont need them so I cant use that as my excuse like I used to, changes are something you do to make life better and I say "bring it on" who wants to be overweight and miserable, hot and sweaty, unfit and unhealthy, my cousins husband died of a heart attack on Sunday morning at the age of 39 he was very overweight ate unhealthily, had a bad back used that as his excuse and my cousin did everything for him, the warning signs where there but they ignored them both of them are massively overweight but never changed there lifestyle, now they have 4 kids that dont have a father. If you dont change the problem you cant blame anyone but yourself.

Heres to a slimmer healthier you Don. "Cheers"

    Re: on the scales

Yes the bars and dessert do work out more expensive.  At least being in Adelaide you can get the shakes at a decent price.  I hope you aren't paying any more than around $45 per box or cheaper.

Up here in the sticks our local chemist wants $61.00 per box of shakes.  Outrageous!!!  So I order my supply online from pharmacy direct even after postage I'm still WAY in front.  Or I pick it up from the Chemist Warehouse on Prospect Rd, or Priceline when I'm in Adelaide.

    Re: on the scales

I visited chemist warehouse on prospect road my self.

    Seemed the cheapest.

Besides the wife making certain that there is a plentiful supply of chocolate and lollies in the house the optifast has not been too hard.

    Re: on the scales

In my opinion the optifast is an inferior product to kick start I am still feeing hungry.

The kicstart seemed easy by comparison.

But we are managing I took the belt in another notch Tuesday so there must be some result.

    Re: on the scales

Good stuff Don, why dont you just use the kicstart if the optifast isnt working as well? The best tasting shake ive tried is Tony Ferguson's or Celebrity slim, they come in yummy flavours I have one for brekky only cos I cant stomach eating in the morning, then after the gym when the furnace is burning I eat good quality food. BTW how tall are you? How much weight does your BMI say you need to lose?

    Re: on the scales

I had this discussion with the surgeon and it is part of the scientifically consistent routine to use optifast.

I suppose the no out of pocket expenses for the surgery is a modest cost to pay for the rumbling tummy.

At least with being a lab rat means a standard treatment and no cutting corners.

Part of the reason for the optifast is to shrink the liver so they can get better access to the stomach how effective the other VLCD are at this is uncertain.

    Re: on the scales

On the BMI issue they have set a target of a BMI of 27 that is a weight of 83 Kg for me.

Presently I need to lose about 40 kg to do this.

The major part of getting the band is achieving the long term control.

I have managed to lose weight in the past but I struggle severely to maintain the weight loss.

    Re: on the scales

Fair enough, I think its good you know what you need to do and I think its probably the best decision you've made there. I got down to 68kg in 1999 and couldnt maintain it, it slowly crept back on but when I look back now I should of stayed going to the gym. The band is definately a tool and I dont think its the easy way out at all, I saw the Australian Story with Mikey Robbins and for him it worked tremendously and gave him his life back, I think he had a lot of emotional issues too, and for people that never feel full or know when enough food is enough its beneficial for them.

Hows the wife going? Is she going to get banded too? How old is your son, it was always my fear of my kids being fat like me when I was a kid, so I think as parents we need to teach them the correct way to eat, as a kid I was never given chocolate or lollies as a treat it was given to me to shut me up or a guilt thing because my father left us when I was 3 but anyway I dont keep it in the house if I give my kids a treat its bought and eaten straight away, if not I would eat it until its all gone.

My son is 13 and luckily he rides his bmx everywhere and has stripped his puppy fat off, also having braces on his teeth restricts what he can eat,oh and girls he's a handsome lad so he's gotta keep the image LOL, and my 4 yr old daughter is genetically skinny like her dads side. What can I say ya just gotta do the best you can with what ya got. Cya Don

    Re: on the scales

    Hello Don,
How is the optifast going? I really hope that by the time you have the surgery your wife is being more supportive.. does your wife have a weight issue also? Its sad that she can't be totally supportive of you and at least try to keep the junk foods to a minumum or even not at all! Perhaps when she sees how much weight your losing she might be more encouraging.. (one can only hope)

Good luck with it all Don I know we're all looking forward to seeing the amazing results!

    Re: on the scales

My wife is about 160 cm tall and a size 20-22 clearly as a loyal husband I could never say that she needs to change.

Her mother and brother are diabetic and she had gestational diabetes when she was pregnant.

Her weight concerns me but if she doesn’t wish to change there is little that I can do.
