    Re: Metabolism ???

I thought the theory is based on the idea that the process of metabolising food/body fat into energy requires a supply of energy to occur.

After a period of fasting (whether awake or asleep), the metabolism has slowed (I would think because the immediate demand of metabolising for is complete but as they say it could be to preserve fat reserves because 'we could be in a period of starvation or famine'.  Yes, the metabolism hasn't stopped and if you never ate again you would end up like the children starving in Africa but it isn't burning fat or calories at any sensible pace for weight loss goals.

Hence if you eat a nutritious, healthy breakfast not only do you provide all the appropriate nutritients to get all your bits working like a finely tuned machine, but you also charge up the metabolism and get it working faster again for optimum energy conversion.

Again, I haven't any direct research references but there is alot of info in the links I gave earlier that have evidence towards this direction.

    jomarti:

but there is alot of info in the links I gave earlier that have evidence towards this direction.

Personally it seemed of little relevance because

I am uncertain that 14 is a statistically significant number.

Some of the R squared vales are very poor

There is no mention of a control group

48 hour fast is probably not typical of the usual period of fasting while asleep

The average BMI was under 25 so the study group are of “normal” weigh and don’t need to lose weight

Lyle McDonald did not return any results for the searches of academic literature I performed.

While Google did give a lot of results for Lyle McDonald just because someone is well represented in Google doesn’t meant that their message is scientifically valid and proven.

When I Google my name I get 1.2 million responses (the first 2 results are even me!!)

I must admit that there seems a vast amount of information presented on nutrition and weight loss but some of it seems scientifically unproven.

Trying to decide what information is good and what is not good seems challenging.

    Re: Metabolism ???

    im thinkin the same jane....

but maybe one could ask their dietician or maybe surgeon for some research?

or if in the mood for self serve drop into the flinders uni library and do a search, or have a hunt around somewhere like this...

    • 98% of Registry participants report that they modified their food intake in some way to lose weight.
    • 94% increased their physical activity, with the most frequently reported form of activity being walking.
    • There is variety in how NWCR members keep the weight off. Most report continuing to maintain a low calorie, low fat diet and doing high levels of activity.
      • 78% eat breakfast every day.
      • 75% weigh them self at least once a week.
      • 62% watch less than 10 hours of TV per week.
      • 90% exercise, on average, about 1 hour per day.

    Re: Metabolism ???

I actually love looking for factual info rather than just listening blindly to the magnitude of rubbish advice that comes along.  I guess researching is a bit of a hobby.

Don, I'm not sure exactly which info you are questioning though?  Is it that metabolism slows if you don't eat eg. overnight or if fasting for a period of time?  Or, that breakfast is as important as it is claimed to be??

Either way, I'm interested to hear what you're thoughts on alternative theory is.   That regardless of the amount you eat your metabolism remains at a static pace perhaps?

    Re: Metabolism ???

I have no proof on this but it would seem to me that the metabolism of an individual would have some genetic influence.

Most of us know people who seem to eat very well and still stay slim.

As for the energy expended during the day.

It seems that the energy required for you daily activities would depend primarily on the nature of the activities (such as sedentary or active).

The thought that the time of day that you put food in your mouth somehow affects the energy available in that food seems unlikely.

But really making a judgment based hearsay and old wife’s tales seems to have the potential for reaching an incorrect conclusion.

I must admit I am finding the weight loss exercise challenging enough without groups with all sorts of vested interests publishing misinformation.

To be honest I don’t believe eating Nutrigrain will turn me into an iron man.

But does anybody know of any credible research that proves that it does?

    Re: Metabolism ???

    i think its about context

eating bowls of nutrigrain for a "normal" person will probably make you fat

however if u are about to run 10k, it will probably make you run a few minutes faster than if you were carb depleted

    Re: Metabolism ???

There may also be a theory that during periods of intense exercise that blood supply is diverted away from less urgent tasks like digestion.

So you should give the food time to digest before you exercise?

But then when the food is digested the execs starts to turn into fat.

It does seem to be getting complicated.

Do many elite athletes regularly eat food that is 32% sugar?

    http://www.kelloggs.com.au/NutritionInfo/NutritionInfo.asp?NutritionInfoID=267

There does seem to be people who suggest too much sugar is bad for you.

But how much is too much?

    One teaspoon or one bucket?

Or does it really depend on a multitude of variables that rarely get mentioned?

    Re: Metabolism ???

I agree Don it is definately complicated and we can confuse ourselves no end if we try to confirm too much.  I reckon try something out and if it works... good, if not... try something else.  My big scientific conclusion!!!

One thing I can say for sure though is One Bucket of sugar is definately too much hehehe

    Re: Metabolism ???

I don't think you'd find any dietician that would recommend eating Nutri-grain. Just because it says that it's iron man food, doesn't mean that it is. Just like eating 11 weet-bix a day won't have you bowling like Brett Lee.

As a simple rule, don't believe ads on TV. That will eliminate much confusion right there!
