Re: No such word as Can't. Lana's New Lifestyle!

Travis, You've got too much time on your hands! *LOL*

I agree with most of what you've written, and I appreciate you taking the time to pass on your knowledge.

One thing I can assure you though is that you can build muscle and lose fat at the same time. Done it many times myself. Done it for clients too.

Muscle is built from the repair and restoration of fibres, whereas fat is burnt as a fuel source. It's quite easy to combine this.

As I said before I'm no nutritionist. My strength is definately exercise. That being said, I've studied nutrition, chemistry, and physiology which at least gives me a better understanding than most.  I've also had the privelage of working closely with many of this countries top dieticians so I've picked up a few things there as well.

The rest is just experience. I have worked with literally thousands of people over the past 15 years. The knowledge I've gained from that I'll try to pass on here!

Unfortunately, when it comes to nutrition there tends to be loads of confusion. For every study you find that supports a certain diet, you'll find one that dismisses it. The only way to know for sure is to find the eating styles that are backed by independant studies, and then give it a go.

What a good eating plan will have is a wide variety of fresh food. Meats, veges, pasta, rice, fruit, (good) fats, nuts, and more. You must have carbs. Low carb diets are very short term. You need carbs for energy. Yes, a gram of fat will provide much more energy than a gram of carbohydrates, but it takes much more to break it down so its less efficient. Now, that's not to say you should eat mostly carbs, you just need to find the right balance for you. Finally, you need to balance the calories (calories in vs calories out)

The beauty of forums like this is that everyone can express their opinions, and I'm sure the opinions expressed are backed by the posters own experiences. I will never say that one eating or exercise style definately won't work because I've seen many people lose weight with totally contrasting styles.

Man, I've got to get to bed!

    Ray

Confused [*-)] Re: No such word as Can't. Lana's New Lifestyle!

Phew! that was a marathon read, thanks to both of you for your input, I was merrily posting away hoping someone would put something else it to either contradict or support my posts.  I have only been speaking from my experiences, I am not an advocate of low carb diets, but have adapted my lifestyle to lower carbs as it really seems to take the inches off but i couldnt live with virtually no carbs at all.  I also have a fairly high protein diet as I have found that with doing weight work I get great results.  My down fall in the past has been high fat and sugar in my diet.  Now most of that has been cut out I am hoping the lesser carb and high protein is going to give me a lean mean body (we can always dream *grin) Surprise [:O]

Re: No such word as Can't. Lana's New Lifestyle!

I dont follow any specific diet and combine all the food groups but I do look at the type of carbs that I am eating. A few years ago I went on a 'no carb' diet and the result of that is now I have insulin resistancy...great!!! So that obviously wasn't the way to go for me. I now concentrate on low GI carbs (i.e. soy and linseed bread instead of white). I also have irritable bowel and eating these lower GI carbs has worked wonders...

Hi ezzie, I am pretty much with you, diets as such are a waste of time as soon as you stop thats it you gain weight.  Lifestyle change is the way to go...........woohoo.  How can anyone eat anything other than soy and linseed or multi grain type breads??  I had some white bread a few weeks ago.........eeeeeeeeewwwwwww.  Have you seen Dr Gillian with it on that program you are what you eat, she squishes it into a gluey blob!

We are just in the process of finalizing it, but soon you'll be able to choose a 'Low GI Meal Plan' in our Meal Planner. Although, most meals there are already low GI.

Re: No such word as Can't. Lana's New Lifestyle!

Just took my profile again and i should be on 1600 calories a day. So i will be going by what they say and see how that goes, after exercise it'll work out to 1200 a day. Better than only 800/900 a day, my body wont think its starving now.

I have pcos and that gives me insulin resistance, but i had my levels checked and they are fine so far. But i am on Metformin but thats mainly to control my pcos.

Snack -  20g uncle tobys crunchy choc chip = 90cals

Breakfast -  50g Corn flakes, 1 tsp coffee, 2 equal, 1cup of milk, and 1 level teaspoon of white sugar = 377

Just looked at the meal planner on this site - they have set me between 1700/1900cals per day with most ending up with between 160/290grams of carbs per day; yesterday was only 157grams. So with that, how many carbs should be consumed a day if i was on too much yesterday? If i have this meal planner has me on between 160/290g and have been told that 157g was too much??

I can't remember the exact calculations but I remember that we set the total calories to your BMR. We've set the Protein-Carb ratio to approx 1:3. Some may call that 'high carb' but it's what all the universities teach here.

ok, coolies. So my 157g on average is ok then, excellent. haha and here i was thinking this lifestyle change was going to be easy! Well it is to the average bear Stick out tongue [:P]  The place where i record all my food down recommend that around 50-60% of your calories should come from carbs, 15-20% from protein and under 30% from fat. Does that sound about right?

Bit more protein, bit less fat!

I usually just say 60% carbs 40% protein. You don't have to worry about adding the fat because if you eat a wide variety of food it will all be in there.

Everyone is different though. How do you feel on it?

Re: No such word as Can't. Lana's New Lifestyle!

*blush* ok guess my combinations dont suit you - sorry Tongue Tied [:S]  My trainer had me on 20% carbs at one stage.  That was a little too low for me I found.  I like to stick at around 100g of carbs per day, I function pretty well on that.  Not sure what it is as a percentage of the rest of the food I eat though.  I try to keep my fat around 20g per day but know there is that leeway to go up to 30g per day.

Re: No such word as Can't. Lana's New Lifestyle!

Have been doing ok, but have added my calorie intake to 1600, so i figure after exercise i'll average out to 1200 - much better than 800cals.

I have adjusted my fat though to 30g a day, so that'll help. Since starting my lifestyle change i have eaten the most fruit and salad/veggies i have ever eaten in my life! lmao So one good thing is coming out of it all. I dont want to push myself on stressing about wheather i'm losing weight each week or not as i think over time the results will speak for themselves. I just want to teach myself how to do everything right first then improve from there.

I'm loving all these colours on here.

Thanks for all your help so far Yes [Y]

Re: No such word as Can't. Lana's New Lifestyle!

Lana, have you measured yourself at all?  How about a good all over measure, dont weigh yourself for a month or so (I hate those bloody scales too) and measure yourself once a fortnight, you can lose cms sometimes  and not lose weight.  The scales can be very disillusioning.  I have been very naughty and started weighing myself every couple of days and I cant seem to get out of it, I have only been doing it for the last week and a half and this morning I was up about 300g and was so upset Sad [:(].  mind you I did measure my legs and found I have lost around 4cm off each leg in the last month so was a bit happier.  I havent posted my measurements up on here as I am not quite ready for that, but I measured bust, waist, abdomen, hips, biceps and thighs.  I am going to remeasure approx every 6 weeks and post up the overall cm loss.  I find that combined with kgs loss is really inspiring.

    GO GIRL!

Re: No such word as Can't. Lana's New Lifestyle!

It isnt easy I can tell you, but once you get into the swing of it it is really quite easy.  It took me an awful long time though as I was a big fruit eater and they are pretty high carb.  I am a strawberry addict at the moment, they are low carb and low calorie so I can get stuck into them especially with them being in season right now.  Had to cut back my bread but eat corn thins which I never thought I would like.  Couple of them with tuna, carrot, tomato, some pepper for seasoning is a great lunch.  I also have them for breakfast sometimes with scrambled egg on.........mmmmmmmm.  I must admit I am little slack on the weekends though, that is when I have some bread!  In fact i had a couple for lunch the otherday with light philly and a slice of grilled bacon.
