please sponsor me - I'm raising money for diabetes research

I have decided to take the plunge and train for my second marathon. At the same time as training for the Honolulu Marathon I am raising money to fund diabetes research across Australia on behalf of the Diabetes Australia Queensland Team Diabetes initiative.

Team Diabetes funds brilliant research medical doctors and scientists to pursue potential breakthrough diabetes research. I really respect this program because not only does it fund research to find a cure for diabetes, but it also encourages ordinary people like me to increase my fitness, lose weight, and raise awareness about diabetes.

I am running and walking for all of my friends and family who are currently undergoing diabetes treatment and in support of my 11 year old cousin who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in November of last year.

I would really appreciate it if you could sponsor me for my training and for Team Diabetes.

     Instructions:

    1.      Go direct to my online fundraising page at www.sponsorme.com.au

    2.      Click on Donate and follow the instructions.

    3.      When you are redirected to the secure online donation page at Diabetes Australia QLD, please select the last option 'SUPPORT A TEAM DIABETES MEMBER' and put JULIA SHAW in the box provided.

    4.      Please return to SponsorMe, fill in your details and give me a message of encouragement.

After a sponsorship has been made online you will receive automatic receipt from Diabetes Australia Queensland.

Alternatively you could write a cheque or money order (from the Post Office) made payable to Diabetes Australia Queensland, which I will forward directly to them. * Please contact me to get my address

Thanks so much for your support.

Re: please sponsor me - I'm raising money for diabetes research

Hi there i just wanted to say what a wonderful person you are to do this as so many of us

    now have diabeties!

I found out 7 years ago that i had diabeties it had been coming on for awhile once

i was told what i had, the tidness, frequent going to the tiolet, the dry mouth-always wanting

a drink and never being able to quench my thirst to name a few of my symptons!

I dragged myself to the doctor it was like i had not one ounce of energy in my body

and did some tests and went home, i had just gotten home and behind my was a knock at the door

It was the nurse she said you better go straight to hospital...

I was ushered striaght through to have my sugar done and it blew the triage away

38.6 my blood sugar level was considering a normal sugar level sits between 4 and 8!

I was a code yellow (internal disaster) rushed up stairs and put on a insulin drip and my sugar

went down to 11 over night then kept going down to normal range! Stayed in hospital for

8 days before i was allowed back home again!

Even though i was 37 at the time the doctors told me i had traits of type 1 and type 2 so they

started me off on the injections and then onto tablets!

WHen i lose weight from my tummy i can come off my medication all together but as soon

as it comes back on its back on medication!

I check my sugar levels everyday and take 2 lots of medication twice a day!

I have had lots of hypoglycemic attacks they can be really scary breaking out into a sweat

and shaking with no control but now that im getting older i have found the medication

i am on really works for me and my body!

I would love to totally be free of my medication but i know i have a lot of work to get to that stage

Im happy that i have it in control as my endocronolgist tells me some people can never get their

sugar down in the good range as soon as i got mine under control it has never strayed out of the good

range and my three monthly blood tests dont lie they are always 5.7 so the doctor knows im looking

after myself which is very important!

I do worry about my legs and a podriatrist cuts my toe nails for me and does my feet care, when your a

diabetic its very important you look after your feet and legs my doctor tells me you have to love them!

I do know people that have not taken their diabeties seriously and one has lost toes and the other

has lost half of one of her legs that scares me enough to really take care of myself!

Having a thyroid condition makes it harder sometimes to control but im pretty confident that

im doing as best as i can!

Bascially to sum it up what Julie is doing it a wonderful thing and i want to wish her all the very best

I really hope your cousin looks after themselves and keeps aware of how important it really is!

Im sure with you and their family helping they will be fine!

Good Luck Julie and your very inspirational! Well Done!
