    GPS units.

Hi people it seems gps units are getting cheaper all the time.

Has anybody had experiences with using them?

If you can easily use a street directory do they have mush of an advantage?

    Re: GPS units.

We bought my sister in law one for Xmas- she lives in Sydney and she's hopeless at getting from A to B.  She uses hers all the time to get around and doesn't know how she survived without one.  Although she did use it a couple of weeks ago to get from her house in Deane Park to Randwick and she used the option to include toll roads- it ended up costing her $16 each way.

From my experience there are better brands to go with- TomTom and Garmin seem to be the most reliable and user friendly.  Garmin do have models that have more uses than just in your car, for example if you're into hiking / camping / fishing / any other outdoor sports the one item can come in handy.

    Re: GPS units.

I have a Nav Man and I love it.  I have a terrible sense of direction and used to do a lot of driving for work so it has been great for me.  If you're good at using a St directory, it may not be such a help though.  I love the convenience of being able to go somewhere unexpectedly, offer to pick someone up  wherever they are, and have no stress of finding the address.

I do fear that one day it will fail me, and I will feel lost without it.  I am dependant on this device and that's a little scary!

    Re: GPS units.

I've just installed Copilot live on my mobile phone and it's pretty good. The points of interest, which includes things like speed camera locations, petrol stations, parking, entertainment, food etc etc are very very handy, for that reason alone I switch the thing on even though I don't need to be navigated. They are all starting to include live traffic feeds and rerouting, that stuff can save you hours (in Sydney that is).

    Re: GPS units.

I got one that says the street names.

    It seems quite good.

Sometimes it seems to chose a different route the has been several times that it has suggested a different way to what I have been travelling and I have saved up to 15% of the distance and some time.

I am quite happy with it.

If consider the amount of information in the unit they are quite good value.

It contains street information on nearly every town in Australia.

If you are likely to ever use this information would depend on many things.

It is quite strange to defer your way finding to this small computer.

There is one place I have been to three times and I would still struggle to find it with out the gps.

Perhaps I shouldn’t have watched west world as a child.

After all “nothing can go wrong”

    I hope.

    Big W sell cheapies

Most electrical type places such as Harvey Norman have them.

I think the quality of the interface is quite important.

Some seem a bit glitchy and quirky.

I have a TomTom Go720! It is the best thing since sliced bread.

The kids use it too!(we have a deal- you lose it or it's gets stolen from your car---you pay for it)

The only downside is that is has a shithouse battery time so you really need to use the in-car charger as well if using it for @ 2 hours.

I've used it in the city in my handbag as well as a portable map..works well.

I d/l the map updates every week and you need to update it weekly to get the latest satellite positions or otherwise it can take forever for your gps to locate them and turn on properly.

I woudn't be without mine now...

d*ck Smith was the cheapest when I bought mine. Be careful of Ebay where some of them don't have Aussie maps.
