    Oh My God

Hello to all. Well here I sit with tears running down my cheek's after just having weighed myself.135.5kg oh my God have found myself on the net looking for some motivational way to help me lose some of this weight. I guess you could say it all started on a downward spiral in Feb 07. I was on my way to my first personal training session at the gym at 5.30am one Wednesday morning. Well I managed to get in the first 3 stairs at home but then fell down the last 10. I yelled out to my husband to call an ambulance as I looked at my ankle and it was facing the other way. I ended up in hospital for 2 weeks with 2 rounds of surgery as I dislocated my ankle, shattered my ankle bones and broke my leg as well. Yes I know I did a good job, but all the hospital staff thought is was quite a laugh to have been on my way to the gym. 3 months in a wheelchair full of pins and metal and then many visits to the physio and I am still unable to walk correctly. The ankle will not bend so I am unable to go down stairs and have great trouble walking on uneven ground.

Feeling sorry for myself the weight has piled on over the last year. I am on one big roller coaster as I feel depressed so I eat but then I am unable to just put on my mp3 player and go walking like most people do to lose weight. I cant seem to break this cycle. Yes I know a lot has to do with what goes in my mouth so I am starting my healthy eating regime today ( which can only benefit my family as well) I would appreciate any ideas as to how I can get my cardio workout without a lot of pressure put on my left leg???

    Re: Oh My God

Firstly, I am sorry you are feeling so low, but well done on coming in here! Great idea!!!!

Have you considered boxing? Yes, you have to stand and move a little, but it gets your heart rate up nice and high! A treadmill is another great thing, It is always flat! It sucks big time having physical restrictions, and it is REALLY easy to give up, isn't it? Everyone else makes it look so easy, but then they can do whatever they want! Sadly however, it is ultimately OUR choices that get us where we are! I think I understand though, I am a bit dodgy myself! (Ankle, knee, coccyx, shoulder and back issues, plus off for more surgery in 3 weeks!) I regularly have to slap myself, because the truth of the matter with me is, as long as I am TRYING I am not giving up and gaining back what I have lost, or more!

Hang in there, maybe start a journal here, I post in mine pretty regularly, even if noone reads it but me, it keeps me on track. When I DON'T post is when I go a bit nutty with the food and exercise!

    Caution: Sarcastic and Cynical!!!

Hi DMJ, welcome to the forum!

You need to focus on what you can do. Non-weight bearing exercise would be ideal for you at the moment so cycling, swimming, or Hydrotherapy should be considered. You also need to be working on that range of motion every day. Do the stretches, 5 times a day if you can. You need to improve your range of motion before you can start loading the joint up.

    Hi DMJ,

    Welcome! I just joined today.

I am not a personal trainer/weight loss coach, but I just wanted to write to you

and give you some words of encouragement.

You can achieve anything, remember that! Every single day, remind yourself of

how determined you are to achieve your goals. Affirm to yourself that you are strong,

    disciplined and successful.

These things will sink into your sub conscious and you will be amazed at the power of your

    mind.

Take care and have a great weekend!

    Maria

    Cheers to your success!

    Re: Oh My God

You need to concentrate on what you can do.

Equally if you have psychological issues you need to accept this and get some help with this.

Perhaps it was not just you leg that got hurt in the fall?

As someone who needs a knee replacement paddling a canoe/kayak can be good exercise that is easy on you legs.

(You will need one with good leg room)
