    Re: Date is set

    coops:

    - interest rate rises mean our mortgage payments have gone from $150/wk above the minimum when we took out the loan (in 2001) to just on the minimum now - without any change in the actual repayments. Extra money would be SO nice because at the moment we have no breathing space - if the car breaks down (which it's prone to doing) we're stuffed.

While clearly I have no idea on your financial situation and how it is likely to change.

I will suggest that while owning real estate can be a good investment it is also a lifestyle choice.

So owning your house should improve your lifestyle.

How much the big mortgage is interfering with your lifestyle only you can decide.

Equally what interest rates will do in the future who knows?

    But looking at

    http://www.nab.com.au/Personal_Finance/0,,79017,00.html?urid=1205117365562

It seems the NAB is not expecting them to go down in the next two years.

How long you can get by with scrimping is a tricky question.

However it is almost certain given the length of a typical mortgage that the hot water service will need replacing along with the car before you get the house paid off.

It is also a fact of economics that inflation can be good for people who owe money as long as they get pay rises similar to the rate of inflation.

This is because a house repayment of $1000 (hypothetically) will be a smaller percentage of the household income if the household income rises over time (assuming interest rates are static so the repayment stays the same)

    Enjoy the new job.

    Re: Date is set

Wow my last post sounded really flat didn't it?! In my defence, I had just spent a whole heap of time doing stats - not the most engaging of topics! - so it's not surprising that I was feeling a bit frazzled!!

Don, on the financial front - we don't have a big mortgage, just low incomes!! When we took out the mortgage we were both working (I was actually on a higher level than I am now, and full-time) and we didn't have kids - but now we're on 1.6 incomes with two extra people - and on top of that the 0.6 straightaway goes to pay for childcare, so really we're on half the income with double the people. But we're lucky because as I said I've just been offered a promotion, which I can take without having any extra financial outlay. We're just having one of those months where everything is up at once - surgery $3500+, rego $700, tyres $700..... That's a lot of money to come up with on one income!!

    Re: Date is set

Food yesterday: crap. Exercise: didn't happen. I was at work 9-6 and then class 6-8. But the good news is that the Prof I work with said that if I want to work 0.8 rather than 0.9 with this new load, then he's happy with that, and if I start early and leave early (8-3) then he's good with that too. So I was thrilled with that because it means I will hopefully still be able to get to the gym three afternoons a week before collecting the babies - and of course I can do Sat & Sun mornings as well - and walk the kids every night. So there is still the opportunity for lots of exercise, even with the increased fraction. So now my obsessing has turned to my degree taking five years rather than two-three!!! Ah, I tell you, my DH is the best person in the world, to put up with all my anxieties and worries - I mean, I'M exhausted by me LOL

    Food today

BF: coffee x 2 (reduced fat milk, one sugar each) and an apple.

    MT: won't have, not hungry.

L: Don't know. I finish at 1, so if I'm hungry when I get home I'll have an OF soup. I had one yesterday and it was surprisingly filling - the cardboard it's made of must be the kind that expands in your stomach ;)

AT: nothing. Planning on taking the kids to the zoo and filling up on water while we walk.

    D: will have steamed vegies.

    Re: Date is set

I'm feeling a bit flat today. I was sick yesterday, so worked a few hours less than usual - late in, early to leave. Went home and had a nanna nap, set the alarm so I was awake to collect the kids! Got home after collecting the kids, was pretty stressed all evening and gave in to two rows of chocolate - I don't even want to think about how many calories that was. But went through some things with my husband, began to do a bit of planning and take control of the situation, and felt much better by the time I went to bed.

Woke up late this morning - I had forgotten to re-set the alarm, so I was an hour late for work. Still feel sick - itchy eyes & nose, blocked sinuses, feel queasy - and also managed to spill coffee all over myself in the car on the way here, which would be less of a problem if I wasn't wearing a light-coloured shirt! So overall a great start to the day!!

But the good news is that posting in here has already made me feel better because it's a good way to vent/whinge! So the day is already on the improve - apart from the temp anyway - 38 today and 39 tomorrow. YUK No

    Re: Friday?

Hi Don, Yes, Friday is still the day. Have had a couple of moments where I've thought "I'm not pulling out, I just want to delay it for a month" - but the leave is organised at work so it's all right for go! So I'll pop in once I'm on the other side and tell you how it goes. I do definitely think that it will be great - I have no doubt that for me this is the right thing to do.

    Thanks for your thoughts :)

    Re: Friday?

Hey everyone, back from banding on Friday. Went into hospital at 11am, into room at 11:30, 12:30 nurse came around with forms, 1:15 was the anaesthetist, then I had a shower and got changed into my gown & stockings. Up to theatre holding bay at 3:30 - had a bit of a panic attack, started to cry and had to really focus on controlling my breath. Was just distressed I had gotten to this point. Started to worry "what if something goes wrong" - couldn't imagine not seeing my babies again. Anyway, got over that, the surgeon came over and said hi,then I went in for the surgery. I remember waking up - in surgery? in post-op? not sure - and feeling very vague, very shivery, couldn't get my mouth to work. Was taken back to room at 6:30 (I'm told! I don't remmeber this) and slept pretty much all night. Woke up a couple of times but mostly slept through the 1/2 hourly obs. At 4:30am I woke up and got up, had a wee and a bit of a walk around, then back to bed and slept until 7:00. Got up, had a shower and got dresed. Had barium drink at 10am, surgeon came to see me at 10:30 and told me I was "absolutely straightforward not problems whatsoever", and then I was discharged at 11am - and then had to wait another 30min for my DH to arrive!! Back home, went to bed at about 1pm and slept until 4pm, then up for some drinks, then back to bed at about 9pm, and slept right through last night to 8:00 this morning. Tummy is definitely sore, I feel like I've been punched REALLY hard, and I have no real inclination to drink - I am just starting to get my first signs of thirst now - but not a lot of pain. Can sleep on my right side and my back, but not my left side. Some shoulder pain but not a lot, and not enough to try to have more Panadeine tablets - they were yucky! Am good with my peppermint tea. Last night had a small cup of warmed up diet custard & low-fat milk - yummy! But other than that have just had tea. Am even thinking about going to a birthday party with my daughter at 12:00!

    Re: Friday?

Sounds like you had a smooth run I was begging for painkillers all night the first night.

I assume you had a laparoscopic operation?
