Do ellipitcal trainers really burn as much fat as they say they do.

Are they a good fat burner??

    Re: Ellipticals

    Yes!

Like anything though, it all comes down to how high you can get your heart rate up. Ellipticals are good at that!

    Re: Ellipticals

Elliptical trainers are one of the best machines on the market. Ive sold many to our customers and the feedback we get is unbelievable. With any elliptical trainer you receive lower and upper body motion for starters. Because the handles move as well you can really get great tone throughout your arms. Ellipticals work on resistance so to vary your heart rate all you need to do is increase the resistance in the machine! I think the most important thing when shopping for an elliptical is to purchase the right one. Most importantly you need to get one with the right stride length. The last thing you need is an elliptical with a short stride length, where the machine is acting like a stepper. Also consider purchasing one that is electronic and contains a variety of programs as that will keep you motivated and allow you to measure your workout. If you dont have programs than that means you need to continuously modify the resistance manually and your workouts will vary from day to day so its really hard at times to measure your success and you courses will be of a varying difficulty. In most ellipticals that include programs you will also find that they include heart rate control where you can actually set your heart rate in the machine and the machine itself will vary the resistance to try and keep you between that certain heart rate level. As my signature states i sell fitness equipment and we let alone have 25 ellipticals. Theres so many varieties, the best thing to do is have a look at the different machines and ask some questions!

    Re: Ellipticals

What are ellipticals like on your knees? One of my doctors suggested they are reasonably easy on your knees because it is more of a sliding motion.

    My knees are not good.

    Re: Ellipticals

depends on the type don.  Some aren't a flowing movement and can be quite chunky or hard on the knees, where the flowing movement would be ideal as they are quite easy on the knees.

With these, you're better trying it out before buying....

    Re: Ellipticals

I had a cheap one and it was bad on my dodgy knees, Don. But the gym ones are not, so I guess you DO get what you pay for!

    Re: Ellipticals

     Hi Ray :)

I am wanting to buy an Elliptical in the next week or so. I want a good one ,smooth riding etc. It won't be just me using it, so it'll need to be sturdy and be prepared to do lots of kms!Stick out tongue

I have looked at one or two...brandwise they all differ of course in quality. The sales ppl say the quaility is in the bearings and that you can tell by giving the steps a bit of a whirl when no-one is on it...if it flows smoothly  it's good, if it stops quickly,no good. How does a 'laymen' decipher what is good or not...?

I don't mind spending the $$ to get one that will last me for years...

Can you recommend a particular one?

    TIA :)

    Re: Ellipticals

I only know the commercial brands (which can be quite expensive) but I do have a client with one and he's quite happy with it so I'll find out.

    Re: Ellipticals

While I haven’t investigated them carefully I would imagine the geometry of the pivots and the size of the wheel would be important issues.

Are the bearings likely to ware out with typical home use?

Clearly the how much extra you get for the extra money is often complicated.

Precor is the brand that he has but they aren't inexpensive.

The best bet is to go in and have a go on a few and see how they feel

    Re: Ellipticals

LOL...well I am *still* "going to buy one". Just haven't gotten around to it yet!!

Now I have a dodgy knee  atm, I am thinking it will be slightly better than walking when it's a bit sore!

From what I've read ,Ellipticals have far less impact on your joints. Wondering how my hips will go as well.

Still haven't checked out WOW ywt...but they also have a brand called Insight (E8000P) whch I am currently looking at getting.

    Hmmm, procrastination anyone? Lol
