    What type of treadmill?

We've decided to check out getting a treadmill - probably just hiring in the short-term, maybe buying a second-hand one.

Who has a treadmill? What kind do you have? What do you love/hate about it?

Ray, is there a type that you would recommend?

    Re: What type of treadmill?

what I'd recommend is getting one that does up to 16.0 km/hr and is 3.0 horsepower.  Precor are a great brand, so is life fitness.  These are professional and more expensive ones.

It's better to try these out to decide whether it's right for you, rather than getting one off the net or straight off buying without trying.  I've done it with the x-trainers and I'd do it with a treadmill, because there are some cheaper versions out there that are really no good for you!  If you're comfortable with it, get it, if not, try another...

The thing with treadmills is you get what you pay for. Unfortunately, many of the cheaper brands will wear out much faster. That being said it also depends on how much you use them and how fast you go on them.

Precor are distributed by Workout World so maybe see if they have any deals going.

    Re: What type of treadmill?

    hi there coops

i just bought a treadmill and i did tonnes of research so i thought i would share the process i went through.

i am an ebayer, i have a store on ebay, so that was my first choice. i went to a fitness shop and got a few prices then i went back to ebay and compared

the ebay prices were around 500-1000 cheaper

so i hummed and haad about it because i am a real warranty person. if its got a motor in it it needs a warranty is my rigid way of thinking so after alot of thought i went to one shop i liked because the girl didnt make me feel like a fat blob. i told her about my dilemma and she knocked off a couple of hundred dollars. the reason why i paid more is this. it has a motor, i want the warranty.it also has electronic components, so i want a warranty.

i made the girl get on it so i could judge the spring, you cant see the spring on an add or a still treadmill and for me, with my injured knees and feet, spring is crucial. i got 3 more years warranty than on ebay on the motor.  if you go second hand dont forget to ask for warranty details because alot of treadmills have 10 yr warranties on frame and the one you buy might only be a few yrs old.

i paid 1100 for mine. it is the lower end but still not cheap enough to die on me in the next few years. it does 16 klm per hour, has many preset fat burning or cario programs and 15 percent incline. im so happy with it. so are my 4 kids who all give it a work out daily.

thing to watch for (my opinion only) if you are fat like me, get longer hand grip things. i am so unco that if they were any shorter i would fall flat on my face. mine come out to the side and i use them alot at the moment. i would have got a wider belt if i had more money but so far it hasnt been a problem but when my legs go like jelly i have to make real sure i stay on the mat

    hope this helped

    treadmills are the greatest

    good luck

    mel

although longer hand grips also mean rubbing against your body or hard knocks when you mistep and run sideways...I've had this and am not a fan of long handgrips...so again, go by personal choice...

    Re: What type of treadmill?

I recenlty bought mine, 2nd hand, from Ebay. I was looking for months. i could not justify hiring, when it costs you so much and they don't have REALLY good ones on the hire/buy programs.

I ended up with this one. http://www.elitefitness.com.au/product.php?id=944&page=2&category=2&type=25
Only I paid $380 for it. I was very lucky though. The guy had barely used it, and so far it has had no troubles!

Honestly, i think you should get the best you can afford, and if it means waiting and saving for another 6 mths while you pound the pavement, try and hold off! the one I got has great cushioning, motorised incline and a longish mat. I would not be happy without those things (espec the long mat, I am part giraffe).

My friend has one, a veyr basic one. I tried ot for ten minutes and ended up with very sore knees, so I am pleased to have good cushioning on mine.

    Good luck!

    Re: What type of treadmill?

I have a Healthstream Liberator and it goes up to 16kph and had many programs and a few diff inclines. I bought it from Family Fitness(now called Fitquip) about 2 yrs ago and paid @ $1700 from memory.

    http://www.fitquip.com.au/

have a look at the website perhaps and see what is available, they have good specials.

I actually hired it first and then bought it(it was brand new when I hired it and I chose the one I wanted as they have stores here in Perth) My hire costs came off the purchase price. If I didn't like it,I would have changed it for a diff model.

I love it! I def wouldn't go for long hand grips.Mine come out a little more than a foot length from the front of the treadmill and are a half circle shape(good for hanging my towel on!) I swing my arms alot while walking and if they were longer,I'd find them a pain and would prob hit my hands on them.Plus it makes it easier to step on the side runners for whatever reason if the handrails are shorter, rather than longer. It also has a ledge along the front where I put my tissues,MP3 player, mobile phone, portable phone and then it has water bottle holders as well.

Even with all it's diff features...I just get on and walk on the flat level at 6.2-6.4kphs and just keep walking. I don't really use the programs on itConfused [8-)]

If you're going to be using it alot, like I do.then I would go for quality not price, but that's JMO :)

    Re: What type of treadmill?

you decided to get a treadmill, thats a wonderful idea. i have one at home too and believe me, it really is an amazing piece of sports equipment. the days i dnt get time for any exercise, then i simply head to my treadmill. but lately i read something that scared the wits out of me!its about someone having had a bad experience with treadmills in a gym- you can read it here too: http://www.imsickofbeingfat.com/forum/1556-tread-mill-scare.html

since then i am ever so careful using my treadmill and would advise you to be as careful too!
